Water Polo tournament rules

Inter-Bay Water Polo Tournament - Rules and FormatWe hope to hold this every 3 months or so, and the teams will play for a trophy. Swimmers in the 7.30 group will have a normal WP session and are not involved in the tournament at this stage. We may review this in the futureFormat- 8.15 and 9.00 groups will merge and come in at 8.15, and will stay for both sessions, or until play finishes, in any event by 9.50pm- 10 minute warm up- Tournament starts 8.30Order of playGames are 5 minutes with 1 minute half time. No change of ends
7 players in the water at any one time. Rolling substitutions.
Goals scored will be added up, and teams put into order, with highest goal scorer at 1, second highest at 2, etc
3 and 4 will play for third and fourth place
1 and 2 will play for first and second
Swimmers who do not wish to play are very welcome to be on poolside to cheer their Bay on
Swimmers from the 7.30 session are welcome to spectate on poolside, providing it's OK with their parent/carer, and that they are behaving in a suitable manner
If spectators are causing disruption or behaving unsuitably, they will be told to leave poolside

The Referee and/or teachers may amend these rules if necessary.
General rules
- The game will consist of 2 halves of 5 minutes actual play with a 1 minute interval between halves
- The first named team on the order of play will wear white caps and the goalkeepers red
- Each squad will consist of all Bay players with a maximum of 7 players in the water at any one time (rolling subs are permitted at any one time)
- At the start of each half, both teams will be required to have 7 players evenly spaced along the goal line
- The referee will start by blowing the whistle and putting the ball on the centre line at which point the players can swim for the ball
- To signal a foul, the referee will blow the whistle and point in the direction that the awarded team is attacking
Rules of play
- Players will be permitted to catch the ball with both hands but can only pass/shoot using one hand
- Players will be allowed to stand but must not walk with the ball or jump off the bottom to intercept an opponent
- Players are permitted to challenge for the ball but must not wrestle with or jump on opponents
- Players should not take the ball under the water
- No player is permitted within 1.5m of their opponents goal
- A corner throw will only be given if the goal keeper deflects the ball out of play and behind the goals
- For all other cases a goal throw will be awarded
- Corners are to be taken from the 1.5m line at the side of the pitch, indicated by the referee
- After a goal, the game is restarted by the conceding team at the centre line when all the players are in their own half following a whistle from the referee
- No defender should be within 2m of a person taking a free throw
- Goalkeepers are not permitted to be in contact with the side of the pool
Violent play
Violent play will NOT be tolerated. In the unlikely event the offender/s will be ejected for the remainder of the game and also miss the following game. A substitute will be permitted immediately.
