Water Polo

Click here for the match report for the tournament March 2008

Water polo is a very energetic sport, using all the muscle groups at speed!

We use polo drills (practices) as contrast activities at the end of some lessons.

We plan to have full water polo sessions every 12 weeks or so, when we get the goals, hats, match balls and whistle out.

The swimmers have a fantastic time playing polo, whatever their age.

The little ones in the Teaching Pool play with smaller, fun balls and a floating hoop, or they come into the Main Pool with arm discs on and play there, with help.

For the groups above Level 5, we divide the Main Pool into 3 sections, putting the goals in an appropriate place for the ability and age of the group.  We work to develop the swimmers stamina, strength and skill by using the drills for passing, moving, using different body positions, placing the ball, and, of course - scoring!

The 8.15 group are given set pieces and practice games to develop their skills, working towards longer, more structured matches when they progress to the 9.00 group.  The matches in this group are fast, physical and fun - both to play and watch!  Refereeing one of these is a good way to check your response times and how quickly you can move out of the way of a speeding yellow ball!

Our aim is for the swimmers to attempt and achieve good control, sound skills and quick responses, and to work towards the ASA Water Polo Bronze, Silver or Gold awards.
